Christmas is one of the busiest times of year in care homes. With festive activities and families visiting, the place can become bustling. So we thought we’d help you get the snowball rolling with ten Christmas activity ideas that you can carry out in your care home over the festive period.
Name the reindeer or snowman
Got a festive toy or decoration lying around? A simple name sweepstake is a fun way to get passers-through in the festive spirit – whilst raising some cash. Hide the chosen name amongst a long list of names and ask people to guess the winning name for a small prize.
Top tip: Probably best not to go with Rudolph or Frosty.
Do you know your frankincense from your myrrh? Your Prancers from your Dancers? With a brisk Google search, you’ll be able to find stacks of Christmas-themed quiz questions which you can make into a quick quiz sheet. Don’t make it too long as it will encourage participants to walk off with it and forget all about it.
Top tip: Add in some ‘guess the year / number’ questions to help separate the top scorers.
Christmas cake sale
Who doesn’t love a Christmas-themed treat? And we’re sure your visitors will too. Ask the kitchen staff to have a go at some festive bakes such as Christmas tree biscuits and Christmas pudding cupcakes. You could even make it into an activity and ask residents to decorate them. Some of your other staff might fancy some home baking too! Hold a bake sale for all to enjoy.
Find the lucky mince pie
Create a 3×3 grid on a piece of card and add a star to one of the boxes. Line up nine mince pies and ask visitors to buy a pie for a small donation. If they pick the one on the star, they can have it for free. Bingo!
Festive celebrations are not the same without making a fool out of yourself. Throw a karaoke party for the residents and their families. You might discover you’ve got a secret Shirley Bassey residing in your home.
Present wrapping service
This is a great way to get residents involved with a fundraising activity. Charge staff and residents’ families and friends to provide a gift-wrapping service. Pop a Christmas CD on for this therapeutic activity and get wrapping!
Christmas jumper day
Christmas jumper days are held by schools and workplaces across the nation during December. Get everyone involved – staff, residents and family!
Tip: Combine Christmas jumper day with the present-wrapping service for an experience indistinguishable from being in Santa’s workshop.
Christmas card donation
Ask friends and family to give the money they would usually spend on Christmas cards to donate to a worthy cause instead. As a popular trend in past years (coupled with all that time-saving) we’re sure you’ll find lots of generous donations.
Organise a carol service and invite friends, family and friends of the care home to enjoy a festive sing-a-long.
Guess the baubles in a jar
Find an old, large jar and fill it with leftover baubles from this year’s tree. Ask family, visitors and staff to take a guess the number for a small donation and reward the closest guess with a small prize.
