We all feel lonely at times but often enough it is simply a passing thought or emotion. Yet for older individuals these thoughts can become a daily occurrence. Loneliness can hold a great impact on an individual’s life quality. Of course, it can be overcome with the appropriate support, but what is the right support?
What is loneliness?
Loneliness indicates that a person’s relationships fail to meet their needs. There are many causes of loneliness and each case is completely personal. Causes can range from grief, health issues or caring responsibilities. Loneliness can therefore hold a negative impact on anyone’s life regardless of background, race, gender or age.
What can be done?
Activcare Coaching have recently been investigating what successfully reduces loneliness. Loneliness is unique to each individual; therefore, support must also be unique. For some, building self-confidence or providing support to attend activities will help them greatly. Others may need support which involves removing stress. Some people will need a wide range of support and others only one service.
Age UK’s ‘Testing Promising Approaches to Reducing Loneliness’ programme found that “tackling loneliness requires listening to and understanding the issues faced by people who are lonely, and providing the support that meets that person’s needs”.
Elderly loneliness is not inevitable. Providing people with support helps build their resilience and enables them to cope with periods of loneliness. For example, creating a sense of community is a highly effective way to prevent loneliness as friendship and support develops among a network of individuals. This allows people to feel less isolated in periods when they are physically alone, as they know they have social occasions to look forward to or friends to reach out to.
How does Activcare Coaching’s services relate?
Activcare Coaching plays a role in tackling loneliness by providing carers with the ability to provide a communal fitness environment for older people. We ensure that our courses provide caregivers with the skills to improve the life quality of others. By enabling carers to create fun fitness classes, we create a sense of community and friendship among participants. As class members develop their physical fitness, they also enhance their cognitive and social abilities, therefore providing them with the ability to break away from loneliness.
